Mistakes to Avoid
BAD: Submitting a 15-page technical roadmap as evidence of “thinking big.” In the November 2023 PRB, a candidate included his 4-quarter feature backlog. The PRB member from Stores asked: “Where is the customer? This is a project plan.” The “thinking big” principle was marked “does not meet.”
GOOD: Two sentences. “I identified that floor manager onboarding was the bottleneck to robotics deployment velocity. I proposed, secured buy-in for, and executed a pilot that reduced time-to-station-readiness from 14 days to 4 days in BFI4, verified by GM Maria Chen, now scaling to 12 facilities.” Named person, named place, named metric, scaling trajectory.
BAD: Listing “influenced engineering to prioritize” without specifying the mechanism. One candidate wrote “worked with SDEs to reprioritize.” The PRB asked in session: “How?” He had no answer. The declining vote cited “insufficient dive deep on cross-functional leadership.”
GOOD: “I constructed a business case showing $890K annual savings from early motor-failure detection. Presented to Sr. PM-T and VP of Robotics. Secured 2 SDE-weeks from the Prime Air borrow program. Shipped in 6 weeks. Motor downtime reduced 23% in pilot.” Specific numbers, specific asks, specific outcome.
BAD: Describing “learn and be curious” as “I attended re:MARS and read papers.” In the February 2024 PRB, a candidate included conference attendance as evidence. The PRB feedback: “Consuming information is not learning. Learning changes behavior. What did you do differently?”
GOOD: “After observing three failed attempts at gripper reliability, I spent two weeks with the hardware team in Kenosha. Identified that silicone durometer, not motor torque, was the primary failure mode. Wrote the spec change. First-pass yield improved 8%. Published post-mortem adopted by 3 sister teams.” Learning that produced action and metric movement.
FAQ
Why does Amazon AI Robotics PRB reject “strong performers” who ship consistently?
The PRB does not reject performance. It rejects performance that cannot be attributed. In the May 2024 cycle, a PM had shipped 14 features in 18 months. Zero promotion. The PRB note: “High output, unclear ownership of outcomes. Features appear to be assigned work, not driven decisions.” She had executed well on others’ priorities. L6 requires demonstrated ownership of the problem space, not execution on others’ definition of it.
How does AI Robotics PM promotion differ from AWS or Alexa PM tracks?
The customer is farther from the PRB’s intuition. An Alexa PM can say “customer asked Alexa to play music” and every PRB member grasps it. An AI Robotics PM says “induction point optimization” and faces blank stares. The burden of translation is 3x higher. In a 2023 cross-org calibration, AI Robotics promotion rates were 22% lower than Alexa at最好的best comparable tenure. The org is working on this. Individual PMs cannot wait.
What is the single highest-leverage action 6 months before PRB submission?
Secure a customer-facing metric that moved because of your decision, documented in writing, with a named stakeholder willing to be quoted. Everything else compounds from this. In the August 2023 cycle, the candidate who passed most decisively had three such metrics. The PRB chair said: “This is what L6 looks like in this org. Clear cause. Clear effect. Clear customer.” The candidate had spent her first 12 months building the relationships that generated those quotes. The last 6 months were just documentation.amazon.com/dp/B0GWWJQ2S3).
